Have you said the following about yourself lately?
- Emotionally confused, mentally exhausted and physically hyper
- Tired, drained, fat, ugly, pushed around by others
- Back pains, can’t sleep, listless, depressed
- I get headaches, I feel like I am in a tightly closed box
- Shaky, wanting to get away, helpless
- A complete failure
- Frustrated, worn out, sick, angry
If you have, then it’s a sure sign that you are experiencing stress.
What is stress?
According to the author, stress is the general feeling you get as a result of a lot of different kinds of problems and challenges. Imagine that every worry, relationship problem, tough homework assignment, and issue with a parent is a separate rubber band around your head. As your life gets more complicated, more rubber bands are layered on until your head is completely covered. Stress is the pressure you feel on the inside.
The following advice is given in Fighting Invisible Tigers on how to take care of yourself:
- Stop negative coping behaviours, such as gambling, sex, drugs, drinking, food, sports and television
- Reach out and trust someone. This may be a school counselor, a teacher you feel good about, someone from your spiritual community, or a distant relative. Get help and support for issues that overwhelm you
- Deal with personal issues such as poor study skills, inability to form healthy relationships, not knowing how to stick up for yourself, not knowing how to prioritize your commitments, problems expressing anger and trouble dealing with losses. Pick up pointers from teachers, parents, or friends. Read a self-help book.
- Be good to yourself. Lower your expectations of yourself, make time for people you like, eat right, exercise and take time to relax and use positive self-talk.
